So I've not been on LJ or DW for a long time. I don't really have an excuse other than Life.

But I've been busy! Here's what I've done recently: watch Daredevil, make others watch Daredevil, read all the Daredevil fic, write some. The comments on the first one are one of the ways I get through the day, as they make me SO HAPPY.

So I am getting my VVC post-show vid posts ready so I don't have to rely on the hotel's wifi to upload my vids, so I can just click "make public" (SEE? I AM LEARNING). And I have some questions:

1) Which format would you like to be able to download my vids in: WMV, AVI, MOV, MP4, other: _____
2) Would you want a high-quality d/l, low file size (compromised quality), or a link for both?
3) Would you like the d/l links to be on my LJ/DW or would you be okay if I just put them in the Ao3 entry?
4)I'll be posting streaming links to both vimeo and youtube. Which would you want me to embed in the Ao3 entry?

VVC and an AO3 stats meme

I'm headed to vivid con next week! I'll actually be hitting up Chicago Tuesday for 2 reasons: 1) I have some friends who live there that I only ever see one convention a year, and 2) GISHWHES.

I'm trying not to think about all the things I have to do before I'm ready to go. Like finish packing, find a bag that is the right size to be a personal item carry-on on Virgin Airlines that will fit my laptop and accoutrements in it, make sure the clothes I want to wear get washed on time, make sure I have enough moneys in my accounts to cover travel expenses, get to know my GISHWHES team, ET CETERA.

vidding problems: aspect ratio

Ok, this was my first speedbump along the way to proper vidding. I had a vid at Premiers at VVC my first year that had different aspect ratios per source, and therefore had border flickering and overlay issues and basically got torn to shreds in review.

And afterwards, thingswithwings cornered me and showed me how to correct aspect ratio in my Sony Vegas software.

And it was all good! Everything was better!

And then I got Adobe Premiere CS4. And everything changed.

I've been pretty great at adjusting aspect ratio thus far. But I seemed to have encountered a problem. I used anydvdhd to rip 3 blu-rays of the 4 I'm using at 1280x720, 1920x1080, and one at 720x480 (i don't know how that one happened). And the regular dvd's at 720x480 widescreen.

Ugh. I am so close to finishing this vid I can TASTE IT. But the aspect ratio! My nemesis!

And it's not like I can just re-rip the blurays...my trial period has expired. and I don't have $80 to purchase it.

What software I have:
Handbrake
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4
Adobe Media Encoder CS4
DVD Decoder

Help me! Please!?

ETA: fixed it! googled way too much and figured out how to make handbrake do what I want. And then when I imported it, it was all IMMA GONNA MAKE THE PREVIEW SCREEN GREEN AND REFUSE TO PLAY and also it said the source was at 90000 fps, which, ha, no. And i just used the whole 'right-click footage -> interpret footage -> adjust frame rate' and SHEBANG. it was done.

I say this in case anyone ever googles this problem so they can find out how I overcame my frustration and save themselves at least an hour of frantic searching.

a survey about audio quality in vids

So I'm making this vid, right, but the audio I was originally going to go with is the live version of the song. I own the recorded version (somewhere), and I would just as rather use an audio track that didn't have random people clapping and cheering in the middle of the song.

The problem is that there's a line of the song that is only in the audio version, and it's a line that will be PERFECT for a scene of the movie I'm working with.

What are your thoughts? Would you watch a vid that used a live version of a song? Or would that put you off?

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2012?

Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23. I wasn't going to, but I was curious and then suddenly, I was hooked.
IT Crowd (bbc), because my friend D made me watch three episodes and then suddenly, I was hooked.
New Girl. GOD WHAT MORE CAN A GIRL ASK FOR? Jess is so stunningly like a cuter, more socially-ept me. And the characters are so incredibly 3dimensional and I ship Jess/Nick like a fiend.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I know I KNOW but I never really had seen more than the Musical episode until my friend shoved the first two seasons on me when she moved, and they kind of sat around on my shelf until one day when I was bored I started watching.
In the same scenario as the above, Get Smart. Only seen a few episodes, though.
The Nerdist. I've followed the goingson of Chris Hardwick since a long time ago. I will follow him into hell. Where we will play video games and chat about the broken ac. ANYWAY.
The Finder. WHICH I AM TRES SAD ABOUT OK. I MISS THAT SHOW WITH THE PASSION OF A THOUSAND BURNING SUNS.

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2012?

Burn Notice. I just. I just couldn't keep up.
Person of Interest. I missed an episode and never had a chance to re-watch and then suddenly there were five hundred episodes and I just stopped. One of these day I will enjoy some Clams!
Supernatural. I was lagging in episodes and then a family member deleted one and couldn't remember which one but I had gotten distracted by new shiny shows and kind of thought, "I don't need this." but then a friend on the Tumblrs was like "NO REALLY KEEP WATCHING. DO IT. YOU WILL THANK ME" so I started catching up. But I'm a few episodes behind now. Again. UH KEVIN TRAN. I HEART YOU.
NCIS. I used to love the hell out of this show. But when the new season came back, I was just never in the mood to watch, and then all the episodes were piling up on my recorder and taking up space and I just deleted my season pass.

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2012? Why?
Um. Elementary. I was going to give it a shot. I was eager to see what they did with it, and also to use it as a gateway show to get my mom into Sherlock fandom (she loved Johnny Lee Miller in Eli Stone). But we could never schedule time around it.
People told me about how Breaking Bad was SOOO GOOOD but again, time. I would have to buy it.
The Misfits. A coworker pressured me into getting it and I just haven't even unwrapped it yet.

Which TV show impressed you least in 2012?

Supernatural. But then I got back in.

Can someone please find me a dl link for the first season? Preferably Regina-centric episodes? I really don't want to have to shell out $30 for the whole season.

But I have a driving need to publish my Regina vid by my birthday in 3 weeks. As a birthday present to myself. Because there's no better gift than seeing something you've created, edited perfectly, saying exactly what you want it to.

My friends and I are planning a get-together tonight in which we get completely smashed and then read each other's old fanfics and giggle into oblivion.

"Oh, hey," I said, "I have a Black Books fanfic, too." (I remembered because I was talking about Black Books with a friend recently).

"WHAT?" my friend makes an 0_o face. "I don't remember seeing that on your fanfiction page! (we had talked about this once before with our old fanfiction.net profiles).

And then I realized: a lot of my old fics never got moved from my LJ to AO3. Including the Black Books fic.

So I went and uploaded it all, as well as edited a few I had already added to reflect the Collections/Challenges I had done them for.

Vid: What You're In To, Sherlock (BBC)

Oh wow did Scandal in Bulgravia break my soul. In a good way. In a funny way. In a "omg please just stop trying to make the audience guess at Sherlock's sexuality. omg. i need to vid this to Flight of the Conchords."

So I did.

Now, side tangent: I got a new laptop! Yay! But it has no vidding software on it! Boo! Well, that's a lie. It has Windows Movie Maker. Which was my first program. I don't know if you know, but it sucks. The edition I had back in the day crashed every new clip i added. This one is a bit improved but it drops clips like crazy. I had to add a clip, wait for it to load, click save, close the program, open the program, click "save movie" in order to get a preview. BUT I DID IT. I HAD A GREAT IDEA AND I USED A SHITTY PROGRAM BECAUSE I COULDN'T HOLD THE VID IN ANYMORE!

Vivid Con!

Um, well, I had planned this super-awesome vid for Premiers but I couldn't amass enough footage for the song (it's a 4 minute song; I used 2 movies worth) in time to submit it, so I did a 2-day cobbled-together Lost Girl intro vid that isn't as awesome as...well, ANY vid I've ever done.

So half of my was like, "Just don't submit anything. If you don't have anything good to show, don't show anything at all." but then the rest of me was like, "Look, vidding is a learning experience. What if people don't like it? Well, they'll let you know at the concrit about how it could have been better. If people like it, you'll be happy. It's a win-win."

So I just bit the bullet and submitted it.

So if you see my vid during premiers, and you absolutely think it sucks, PLEASE leave constructive criticism to THIS POST, this post right here. If you liked it, YAY! I tried something REALLY NEW that I've seen other people do, about a show I think everyone should watch.

After it shows, I will update this post with a streaming link and a dl link.

so I was reading this post and she was talking about Bodyswap focusing on the physical sensation and I thought...what would it be like if someone bodyswapped with a robot?

Here's the trippy part: I wrote these stream-of-consciousness. One after the other. I copied them to this post. When I went back to my word processor to determine wordcount....each piece had exactly the same amount of words. By accident.

Sigh. I really hate missing deadlines, but my life has been too busy lately to make them.

Thoughts about my Vids.

I realized recently that my Youtube channel didn't have the majority of my vids on it. In the process of finding the right sized and correctly audio-ed vids to upload on there, I began thinking about what my favorite parts of my past vids were.

There's always a moment (a clip, a bit of music/video matching), just one, in each of my vids that makes me think "This is important".

The first time I did a real vid (not clip-pirating from youtube oh goodness those were the dark years) and had it shown semi-publicly (OH VIVIDCON), it was a Premiere vid about Merlin to the song "Dream Awake" by The Frames. Hopefully you don't remember it, because it was terrible. Terrible editing, rush job, slipped frames, wonky aspect ratio, the whole nine yards of FAIL.

But I was so proud I could do it! The idea was fantastic, the concept that Morgana was a Merlin-version of Cassandra was sound, and I seriously regret that the first time I put that idea out there was coupled with shit editing. If I had polished it more before sending it, if I had given myself more time to complete it (instead of getting the last episode on my computer THE DAY BEFORE IT WAS DUE), I'm sure it would have been better received. On top of the editing fails, I put the description in the program book as an explanation for who Cassandra was, and a lot of people didn't like that I thought they didn't know. I know now what I didn't know then: it's better to assume everyone's on the level than to assume they're not and piss people off.

ANYWAY, that vid sucked, so I polished it. I did what I should have done before I sent it in, and I made it better. My MOMENT OF AWESOME (aka my favorite part) is when you see Morgana throw Arthur a sword when he's fighting. The entire first half of the vid is all "Morgana, like Cassandra, has prophetic dreams, and nobody listens to her about them. Meanwhile, Arthur and Merlin are taking care of these badass baddies, and Morgana is stuck at home, probably locked up in the dungeons, helpless to fight them off." and then you have Morgana tossing Arthur his sword, followed by Morgana Fighting, Morgana Defending herself, etc, and it's the turning point for the whole vid. Yes, she has dreams, yes, no one listens, but no, she is not helpless. She fights WITH Arthur and Merlin.

In "Call It Off", my unknown vid (Youtube won't let me post it without disabling the audio ARGGG) in a very very small fandom (Sunshine Cleaning), it's just tears, tears, tears, phones, their mom, sadness, hard decisions, (which is okay, I like that vid, I think that's the point of it. They have to make choices, and they will get hurt by them.), and it's full of clips that have emotional resonance in me (mostly because the acting is so fucking awesome, I am swept away in a wave of tears at them) so it's not really that when my Moment OF AWESOME comes around it's awesome because it makes me cry....

When there's that 4-part clip sequence between Norah-and-Lynn, transitioning to Amy-and-Mac, transitioning to Norah-and-Lynn, back to Amy-and-Mac...it's the point of the vid, right there. Norah/Lynn is Forbidden Hope, Amy/Mac is Forbidden love, Norah/Lynn is Happy Friendship, Amy/Mac is Happy Love, it's like a step forward and a step backward, a tiny dance that shows comparisons in the relationship each sister has. It just settles my heart.

In "Friends", my most recent and beloved vid, which I made for Festivids 2010 for Valika, is, surprisingly, my mother's favorite. She will demand to see it every day and posts links to it on her FB page. She doesn't even know the fandom. This makes me happy. My MOMENT OF AWESOME is the second PING in the beginning, when Arthur Dent hits his head going down the stairs.

It sends the message: "This video is for the LOLZ. do not take this seriously." It's very rare that I have such a simple message in the beginning of any of my vids. The first PING is a lighthearted romp, the second ping is OKAY TIME TO LOLZ U GUYS, the third PING is HAHAHA no really, this vid is stupid, but in a funny charming way.

In "WTF" my Sherlock (BBC) vid, just the very thought that I put the song lyrics ON THE SCREEN, WITH THE VIDEO FOOTAGE and pulled it off is practically a moment into itself. There are, however, 2 MOMENTS OF AWESOME (gasp!).
1) the first "there's just this thing about you". It also sets the theme of the whole vid with that one line. There's just this thing about Sherlock, you know? And it's fucking with John's mind. The whole vid is a giant WTF moment in John's head.
2) I'm quite sure I'm the only one who knows about this little Easter Egg I've hidden in the text....but when it does the first "the kinda thrill/ that could maybe kill ya"? The way I've arranged the text, when it fades from "the kinda thrill" into "that could maybe kill ya", there's a point where it almost says "the kinda kill/ that could maybe thrill ya" which I think is the truest Sherlock statement. I was hoping someone would catch that little visual spacing/poetry thing I did, but oh well. Can't win them all.
